Production value of Taiwan's dedicated semiconductor packaging and testing industry is forecast to grow 4.9% to US$13.88 billion in 2013, while the global industry will generate a smaller 2.4%, according to a recent Digitimes Research report. The driver of growth for Taiwan's dedicated semiconductor packaging and testing industry continues to come mainly from the boom in the worldwide IC design business, Digitimes Research indicated. For example, Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) and Siliconware Precision Industries (SPIL) saw orders placed by their fabless customers generate a combined US$37.56 billion in the fourth quarter of 2012, compared to US$35.53 billion a year earlier, Digitimes Research disclosed. ASE and SPIL continue to lead Taiwan's IC packaging and testing industry. The pair's combined share of the Taiwan industry topped 50% for the first time in 2012, Digitimes Research said. In addition, Taiwan's leadership in the worldwide packaging and testing industry remains firm, according to Digitimes Research. Dedicated semiconductor packaging and testing companies based in the island supplied 57.5% of the global market in 2012, up from 57.2% in 2011. The proportion will climb further to 58.9% in 2013.
