Japan market: WiMAX operator UQ covers a population of 10 million, says company CTO

UQ Communications, a WiMAX operator in Japan, has expanded its network to more than 20,000 base stations to cover a population of 10 million, according to company CTO Fumio Watanabe at 4G International Forum held in Taipei on July 10. Being a subsidiary of mobile telecom carrier KDDI, UQ uses its WiMAX network as backhaul to provide Wi-Fi hot spots for KDDI subscribers' access to the Internet in addition to its WiMAX operation, Watanabe indicated, adding UQ has set up 100,000 such hot spots.
