Taiwan government yet to decide on inclusion of WiMAX bands in new mobile Internet licenses

As the Taiwan government is expected to approve release of two total bandwidth allocations of 135MHz (one for upload, one for download) for operating mobile access to the Internet in an open bid at the end of 2013 as proposed by the National Communications Commission, it has not yet decided on whether to include 2.6GHz frequency bands currently used in WiMAX operation into the release, according to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC). The 2.6GHz bands used by the six WiMAX operators are three 30MHz-bandwidth sections of 2.565-2.595GHz, 2.595-2.625GHz and 2.660-2.690GHz, MOTC indicated. Because these frequency bands are in use and WiMAX operating licenses still have one to two years to expire, the government has to wait for completion of mergers among WiMAX operators or to see operators' new operating plans before deciding on disposing of the WiMAX-use frequency bands, MOTC explained.
