While the flat-panel display industry readily acknowledges that organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays offer plenty of theoretical advantages over TFT LCD, including a high contrast ratio and very fast response times, OLEDs also have limitations, currently. Notably they have a relatively short lifetime. Nevertheless, worldwide, a number of companies are continuing to develop OLED displays, typically starting out with small displays for MP3 players, the sub-displays in mobile phones and the like, while TV displays and even printable displays remain the holy grail for R&D teams.
