AMD soars in 2Q09, Intel and Nvidia show gains too, says Jon Peddie Research

Press release, July 28

Jon Peddie Research (JPR) has announced estimated graphics shipments and supplier market share for the second calendar quarter of 2009.

The first quarter of 2009 showed an improvement compared to the fourth quarter of 2008, but it was less than expected. The second quarter was a very good quarter for vendors, a counter to normal seasonality, said JPR.

Traditionally, first quarter to second quarter sales decline due to summer vacations and preparation for the fall, but in 2009, preparation seems to have gotten off to an early start, JPR noted.

GPU shipments reached 98.3 million units in the second quarter of 2009, up 31.3% from the previous quarter.

But things are probably not going to get back to normal seasonality till the third quarter or the fourth quarter, and GPU shipments will not hit the levels of 2008 until 2010, JPR said.

JPR predicted an upturn in the PC market for the third and the fourth quarters, in particular for the graphics market. The research firm said it is optimistic because these are seasonally the best quarters.

In the fourth quarter, there will be two new operating systems: Apple's Snow Leopard, and Windows 7 which will help stimulate new purchases in the holiday season.

Also AMD and Nvidia will be introducing new 40nm designs with higher performance, GPU-compute, and aggressive prices.

The worst is over for inventories run down and the channel is now restocking for back-to-school, and the holiday, JPR added.
