Taiwan-based WiMAX operator First International Telecom (Fitel) has revealed that it will cooperate with China Mobile to set up 5-10 TD-LTE base stations in the government-planned Taoyuan Aerotropolis beside the Taoyuan International Airport, northern Taiwan, to undertake one-year field tests.

In this trial project from July 1, 2011 till June 30, 2012, China Mobile will offer technological assistance and Taiwan-based notebook maker Quanta Computer will provide equipment and terminal devices.

Industry sources in Taiwan said Fitel is inclined to operate TD-LTE services using existing WiMAX radio frequency bands, but this is subject to approval by Taiwan's National Communications Commission.

Commissioned by the China government to promote TD-LTE, China Mobile is setting up trial networks based on the home-grown Long Term Evolution standard in seven main cities around China, the sources indicated.
