On November 15th, 2014, a 17-meter long fuel cell passenger ferry began her first daily service in Sun Moon Lake, the world-wide famous National Scenic Area in central Taiwan. Each year more than 6 millions of tourists visit Sun Moon Lake to sightsee this beautiful landscape.
This fuel cell ferry named Star of Hope was designed and manufactured in response to the rise of environment protection awareness and the elevation of passengers' comfort requirement. Star of Hope emits no green house gas, and also removes fossil fuel odor by adopting the cutting-edge design of fuel cell and battery hybrid-power solution.
The fuel cell electric powertrain of Star of Hope was designed and integrated by YC SYNERGY(YCS) in Taiwan. YCS spent a little over 8 months to fully complete the production and integration of the electric propulsion system. After multiple and detailed testing and the certification process, Star of Hope is the only electric ferry that passes all major performance and safety inspection by the Ministry of Transportation in Taiwan.
Star of Hope uses a catamaran design, or twin hulls, to reduce water resistance and expand the deck space for accommodating up to 90 passengers. The power train includes 2 sets of 40KW motors operating simultaneously at over 300 Volt power, and with YCS's transmission design, the ferry can reach over 10 knots. At 6 knots cruising speed, the running time can last for over 8 hours. Furthermore, this vehicle is also equipped with solar panel as an auxiliary power for the light-current system.
YCS' powertrain has dual power source, fuel cell and Li battery. The PEM Fuel Cell that YCS uses in the powertrain solution has several advantages: fast start-up, low reaction temperature (<80 degree C), long life, and excellent for repetitive start-stop operation. Integrated with YCS' fast power demand responding system, the fuel cell can provide needed power in time. With LiFe battery, the solution can provide high power output and long cruising range.
