Notebook vendors to cut panel orders in July

Yen Ting Chen and Rebecca Guo, Taipei

Due to a slow second quarter this year, the worldwide top-three notebook vendors are reported to have not met their shipments goal, creating and overstock of components. Therefore the notebook vendors have decided to drop their panel orders in July to help clear inventory.

Hewlett-Packard (HP) recently lowered orders from its Taiwan- and Korea-based panel partners by 10-20%, according to industry sources.

The drop in notebook panel demand will have a corresponding impact on prices in July. However, in August, when the vendors have digested some of their inventory, plus the back-to-school season, demand is expected to rise again. Even if panel prices in August do not improve, panel makers expect September to be much better.
