Corning demonstrated its Gorilla Glass automotive applications during the Touch Taiwan 2017 trade held in Taipei in late September. The Gorilla Glass is cold-formed into irregular and curved shapes for cater to various interior designs of cars, according to Corning. The cold-form process enables lower production cost than hot forming. Corning is eyeing the huge business opportunities offered by the automotive market. It cites research firms as estimating that the number of connected cars will reach 69 million by 2020, and that the number of on-board display per car will grow from 0.9 in 2017 to 2.1 in 2024. This year marks the 10th anniversary since Corning unveiled the Gorilla Glass. While the glass has found growing adoption in consumer electronics, the automotive market for both interior and glazing applications has also been a major target for Gorilla, according to Wang.

Corning, eyeing the new opportunities in the automotive industry, showcased a Gorilla Glass-enabled concept vehicle at CES 2017 in Las Vegas. Corning said by bringing Gorilla Glass to the automotive industry, it is delivering lighter, tougher, and more optically advantaged solutions, enabling improved fuel efficiency, and a safer, more enhanced user experience for both drivers and passengers. Corning's custom-built car features: A lightweight Gorilla Glass hybrid windshield with augmented reality capabilities, providing real-time updates on traffic and landmarks, and enabling a lighter, more fuel-efficient ride; a Gorilla Glass dashboard and floating center console, providing users with fully integrated connectivity that keeps drivers and passengers informed and entertained; a Gorilla Glass hybrid sunroof.

Corning has announced that its latest cover glass enhancements, Vibrant Gorilla glass, is featured on Acer's new Chromebook 14 for Work notebook, which has just been unveiled in New York. With Vibrant Gorilla, Acer and other mobile device makers can expand their options for device design with multi-color, high-resolution images printed on Corning's cover glass solution, Gorilla Glass. Since its launch in 2007, Gorilla glass has been used on 4.5 billion devices worldwide, on more than 1,550 product models across 40 major brands, according to Corning.
