MediaTek has recently launched the Kompanio 900T AP for Android-based tablets and expects the chip to help it maintain the leadership in the Android tablet AP market.

The Kompanio 900T is manufactured via Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) 6nm node. It features an 8-core architecture - two Arm Cortex-A78 and six Arm Cortex-A55 - and is packed with an Arm Mali-G68 GPU and MediaTek APU for AI functionality.

With tablet demand significantly driven up by the stay-at-home economy, competition has been growing from existing AP suppliers including Intel and Qualcomm as well as newcomers such as Google and Unisoc.

MediaTek has been the largest AP supplier for Android-based tablets since 2014 and has also released the Kompanio 820 and 1300T previously.

Compared to MediaTek's Dimensity 5G processor series, the Kompanio family focuses more on low power consumption, computing ability, support for large screens and high-speed transmission.

However, MediaTek's competitors such as Qualcomm have continued supplying smartphone APs for tablets. Lenovo's Tab P12 Pro and YOGA Pad Pro, Huawei's 10.8-inch MatePad Pro and Xiaomi's Pad 5 Pro are all powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 870 processor.

Unisoc has also recently partnered with Hisense, Alldocube and BBK to release tablets powered by its in-house developed processor, while Google is also set to release new Pixel 6 and 6 Pro smartphones with in-house developed SoC. Google's in-house developed processors for Chromebook and Pixel tablets are also expected to debut in 2023.
