Smartphone-use lens module maker Genius Electronic Optical (GSEO) has approved a plan to set aside a budget of NT$2.098 billion (US$74.98 million) to purchase new equipment that will help it ramp up output to satisfy future market demand.

GSEO's expansion aims to build up its capacity to maintain competitiveness in the iPhone's supply chain ecosystem, according to industry sources.

The sources noted that China-based camera module maker Sunny Optical Technology is likely to cross into the iPhone supply chain in 2021, posing a threat to Taiwan-based suppliers, including Largan Precision and GSEO.

Affecting by seasonal factors, GSEO expects its revenues to remain flat in first-quarter 2021 before gaining momentum in the second quarter, said company sources, who noted that sampling of new models has been proceeding as scheduled.

The company posted revenues of NT$4.924 billion in fourth-quarter 2020, down 5% sequentially but up 30% on year.

For all of 2020, revenues reached NT$15.895 billion, increasing 32.01% from a year earlier.
