Shipments of TWS (true wireless stereo) devices in the Indian market remained strong in first-quarter 2021 with local brands having a major share, according to Counterpoint Research.

TWS headset shipments in India surged 156% in the first quarter of 2021 from a year earlier, with boAt, OnePlus, Realme, pTron and Noise as the top-five vendors, according to data compiled by Counterpoint.

The bestselling model in the first quarter was China-based OnePlus's Buds Z, which accounted for an overall 10% market share. However, three of the top-five models were from local brand boAt, which accounted for 50% of the sales for the top-five.

Some analysts said that more local brands have geared up the production capacity for TWS products after the Indian government extended its PLI (production linked incentive) scheme to include wearable devices.

According to IDC data, in addition to booming sales of TWS headsets, overall shipments of wearable devices in India hiked 170.3% on year in the first quarter of 2021.
