Tablet PCs will not replace conventional notebooks, say Acer founder

Acer founder Stan Shih, at a forum hosted by the Taiwan government, stated that tablet PCs will not replace conventional notebooks because tablets are positioned to fill a specific niche.

Shih used netbooks as an example, noting that market watchers were also concerned that the devices might devour demand for notebooks, but the fact is that netbooks created a new market segment and alongside the traditional notebook market. Traditional notebooks are currently still seeing stable growth.

Shih pointed out that the tablet PC market is currently taking off and is expected to grow rapidly, but it does not mean that netbooks and traditional notebooks will see a drop in shipments since the overall notebook market is seeing steady growth.
