Acer is set to showcase its new Internet of things (IoT) solutions for cars that it has developed jointly with Germany-based Advanced Telematic Systems (ATS) in the third quarter, said Maverick Shih, head of Acer's BYOC and tablet businesses.
He said the solutions will have a chance of entering the supply chain of car vendors such as BMW.
Acer's BYOC business is currently focusing on four major fields: communication, smart home, healthcare and smart automobile, and IoT solutions for cars requires a longer time to develop. For IoT solutuions for cars, Acer has placed its R&D focus on data security as Europe-based car vendors have major concerns on putting their clients and products' data onto a cloud computing platform.
Acer is now cooperating with ATS, which has tight relationships with Europe car vendors, and is hoping to enter their supply chain via the relationships.
US-based cloud computing solution providers such as Apple, Google and Microsoft have been aggressively looking to enter the IoT car applications sector, but car vendors in Europe are concerned about possible confidential data leak to these cloud computing players.
However, Acer's entry into the car vendors' supply chains is unlikely to occur immediately as the vendors usually take a long time to evaluate their suppliers.
