The Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TRSI) was inaugurated on January 30 under the National Applied Research Laboratories (NARLabs), marking the world's only national tech research organization that integrates IC design, tape-outs and testing, and R&D of semiconductor components, materials and processes.
TRSI is a merger of the National Chip Implementation Center (CIC) and National Nano Device Laboratories (NDL), both under NARLabs administered by the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).
Inaugurating the TRSI, science minister Chen Liang-Gee said that the merger is expected to create a better environment for both academics and researchers while assisting in the preparations for future technological progress.
In line with the ministry's Semiconductor Moonshot Project, Chen continued, the new institute will operate Taiwan's first AI laboratory to provide one-stop testing and accreditation services for AI-related chip solutions and hardware devices and help academic research units turn their creative concepts into concrete AI chip systems for cooperative applications by industrial sectors.
Chen stressed that TRSI must nurture talent in various ways to help more young people recognize the value of joining the semiconductor industry as a lifelong career.
TRSI director general WK Yeh said that researchers at the institute will actively join forces with academic teams and industrial partners to carry out new researches on quantum computer, smart machinery, smart healthcare, innovative AI and IoT applications.
