How to help Japan

Michael McManus, DIGITIMES, Taipei

Media outlets worldwide are offering advice on various ways readers can provide support to the growing crisis in Japan. The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Yahoo have provided contact information and links to several established agencies, such as The Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders and Save The Children that are planning to provide relief services to Japan.

Other sites such as Network For Good provide tools for users to donate to their charity of choice, while some bloggers are offering advice on some alternative methods of giving, such as by using text messages or iTunes.

The media is also warning people to be careful and make sure they donate to a legitimate organization. According to one article, although you can count on the generosity of people when a natural disaster occurs, you can also count on plenty of scam artists looking to take advantage of that generosity.
