BYD Atto 3 and Perodua Ativa Hybrid, both target the middle class and are sporty SUVs. They are environmentally sustainable but vary in many other aspects such as price and size.
Which electric vehicles will capture the most hearts in Malaysia?
A car review site, dsf.my, spotted the company's unspoken hint, a job advertisement for a branch manager position from Sime Darby Motors Malaysia on August 1, 2022. This reflects Sime Darby Motors Malaysia's likely launch of BYD EVs.
Another car review site, paultan.org asserted that it has glimpsed Perodua's Ativa Hybrid on Malaysia's road. The president of Perodua confirmed that the taped-up SUV was being used for "evaluation and study," but did not provide details, citing paultan.org.
BYD Atto 3
Last month, BYD's Yuan Plus (named Atto 3 in other markets) made its debut in Singapore. Inspired by "attosecond," this model brings speedy, energetic, and dynamic to the Southeast Asian market.
Embodying BYD's new design language, Atto 3 is the first SUV featuring the sporty-themed interior designed by BYD global interior design director Michele Jauch-Paganetti. "This model exhibits the sense of passion and energy for the customers," said BYD in a press release on February 19.
According to BYD, the vehicle features a 150kW motor of standard configuration that can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 7.3 seconds. Atto 3 has a size of 4455/1875/1615mm and a wheelbase of 2720mm, respectively.
In terms of its battery, BYD's revolutionary blade battery technology comes as a standard in ATTO 3. Launched by BYD in 2020, Blade Battery is the only battery that successfully passes the nail penetration test.
More precisely, the space utilization of the Blade Battery pack increases by over 50%, compared with that of conventional lithium iron phosphate block batteries, resulting in significant improvements in energy efficiency and range.
Perodua Ativa Hybrid
The idea of Perodua introducing an Ativa Hybrid is not currently new. It is believed that Ativa Hybrid will be adopting Rocky e-Smart Hybrid technology.
The e-Smart Hybrid has a 106 PS electric engine and a WA-VEX 1.2-liter Atkinson 3-cylinder engine. It uses this generator to extend the car's battery range. That mill produces 82 PS at 5,600 rpm and 105 Nm of torque from 3,200 to 5,200 rpm. Daihatsu claims a combined fuel consumption figure of 28 km/L on the WLTC mode, citing paultan.org.
"Before electric, we [Perodua] are also going to do hybrids to make sure that customers are comfortable, and understand that somehow or rather, if you use EVs, you may have to change your driving [pattern] and lifestyle," Dato' Zainal Abidin Ahmad, president and CEO at Perodua Auto Corp said.
Perodua sold 127,343 vehicles, a 30% increase from 97,290 units sold in 1H21, on the back of strong demand for vehicles in 1H22 due to the sales tax exemption deadline.
"While semiconductor chip supply and Covid-19 would still influence production, we expect that production and registration will continue to improve. We do not foresee other factors such as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to have a major impact on Perodua's production moving forward," he said. "We are maintaining our 247,000 sales targets for this year."
