The three primary high performance computing (HPC) chip suppliers, Intel, AMD, and Nvidia, all experienced lackluster sales in the first half of 2023 amid weak demand for HPC applications, according to a survey of DIGITIMES Research.
Abstract

The competition for HPC chips has not slowed down amid the semiconductor industry downturn; instead, the top-3 chip vendors - Intel, AMD and Nvidia - are actively introducing new CPU/GPU products to capitalize on the surging demand for AI model training and inference.

According to DIGITIMES Research, shipments of notebook, desktop and server products in the second half of 2023 will be higher than those shipped in the first half, along with a recovery in demand for HPC chips, boosting revenues of Intel, AMD and Nvidia.

As the recovery in the notebook/desktop market is relatively moderate compared to the server segment, which means that Intel and AMD, which rely on more revenue contribution from notebook/desktop products, will experience less revenue growth in the second half of the year compared to Nvidia, which has an advantage in the AI server market.
