MediaTek, the leading smartphone AP supplier in India, sees the country as a promising market for its automotive technology. The company is focusing on providing scalable hardware and software solutions while prioritizing safety and reliability for the automotive sector.

In an interview with Business Today, Mike Chang, corporate vice president at MediaTek, described India as a land of opportunity with rapid growth. Chang stated that the company is entering India's automotive market with secure automotive-grade chips that do not compromise on safety.

To enhance its automotive offerings, MediaTek is collaborating with Nvidia to leverage expertise in AI and GPUs for innovative user experiences. While open to integrating AI models like ChatGPT, the company believes a balance between open systems and proprietary differentiation is crucial. However, introducing open-source innovations in automotive products is expected to take time to establish.

MediaTek, which held a 54% share in India's smartphone system-on-chip (SoC) market in the second quarter of 2024 according to IDC, has announced a collaboration with India-based Jio Platforms. The partnership aims to develop smart digital clusters for electric two-wheelers in India, with the resulting product expected to offer features such as voice assistants, music streaming, and navigation.

Meanwhile, Qualcomm, currently holding the second-largest share in India's smartphone SoC market after MediaTek, has recently launched the Snapdragon 4S Gen 2 chipset. This move aims to make 5G smartphones more affordable, potentially bringing prices down to under INR8,000 (US$99). By doing so, Qualcomm is positioning itself to challenge MediaTek and regain market share in the highly competitive Indian market.
