Samsung Display (SDC) is reportedly accelerating the development of foldable devices for Apple as the South Korean giant is coordinating preparations with its partners, aiming to establish a supply chain and invest in relevant equipment by the end of 2024. According to industry sources cited by ZDNet Korea, SDC and its partners are actively discussing the creation of an "Apple foldable device ecosystem."
Ecosystem ready to go
Apple's foldable display will require components and materials such as protective glass, hinges, and black PDL (Pixel Define Layer). Reports indicate that SDC has largely completed the configuration of the supply chain for Apple's foldable devices, with industry speculation suggesting that the final supply chain will be confirmed in the fourth quarter of 2024.
Previous reports have pointed to Apple's plans to integrate foldable displays into products such as the iPhone and iPad. Most views suggest that Apple's foldable phone could be launched in the second half of 2026 or the first half of 2027. The screen sizes are expected to range between 7 and 8 inches, similar to a book-like folding format.
According to South Korean industry insiders, while SDC has not explicitly named its target equipment, discussions with partners have already touched on specific plans for Apple's foldable business. These talks include plans to produce 6th-generation OLED panels and preparations for future 8th-generation panels.
The 6th-generation panel, with dimensions of 1,500mm by 1,850mm, is mainly used for small to medium-sized IT devices. Apple's first foldable device is expected to be produced on this line.
Additionally, SDC's ongoing construction of an 8.6th-generation OLED factory (2,290mm by 2,620mm) is aimed at the IT device OLED market.
