Packaging and testing firm Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE) has announced the opening of its Phase 3 manufacturing facility in Weihai, Shangdong province, China. The new building is part of ASE's plans to increase its manufacturing capacity for discrete ICs, according to the company.
ASE will recruit an additional 2,000 employees in engineering, development and operations for the new facility, which occupies 5,120 square meters of land and has a floor space of 30,560 square meters, the firm said.
ASE acquired the Weihai plant from Aimhigh in 2008. The facility is focused on the packaging and testing of discrete semiconductor devices such as TO-92, Power and SOP/DFN, which are widely used in automotive, consumer, computing, communications and industrial applications. Over the years, ASE has invested about US$200 million on building expansion, equipment purchases, facility upgrades and R&D, the firm disclosed.
With the advent of cloud computing and increased semiconductor content in various electronics applications, there is a significant opportunity for growth in discrete semiconductor manufacturing, ASE indicated.
In addition to Weihai, ASE also has plants in Shanghai and Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, China. In Taiwan, its manufacturing sites are located in Kaohsiung and Chungli, northern Taiwan.
