Solid-state lithium ceramic battery (LCB) maker ProLogium Technology will set up a joint venture in Vietnam with local car vendor VinFast for making EV-use batteries, according to industry sources.

ProLogium will begin production at a new factory in northern Taiwan in fourth-quarter 2021, with the factory to provide semi-finished solid-state LCBs consisting of cathodes, anodes and electrolyte for the JV, the sources said. The JV will obtain licenses for using ProLogium-developed multi-axis Bipolar+ technology to package the semi-finished solid-state LCBs into CIM (cell is module) and CIP (cell is pack), the sources noted.

ProLogium will expand annual production capacity at the new factory from 0.5GWh initially to 1-2GWh eventually, the sources indicated.

VinFast became one of the top-5 car vendors in Vietnam in 2020, unveiled three smart EV models earlier in 2021 and is undertaking a project for testing autonomous vehicles in the US, the sources said. Vingroup, VinFast's parent company, is the largest private corporation in Vietnam.

VinFast is expected to launch EVs equipped with ProLogium-developed solid-state LCB packs in 2023 at the ealiest, the sources noted.
