Taiwan IPC makers unable to benefit from 2010 Shanghai Expo without cooperation from SI providers in China

There are lots of business opportunities coming from the 2010 Shanghai World Expo for Taiwan-based industrial PC (IPC) makers, but makers have no access to sharing the large business unless they cooperate with China-based system integration (SI) service providers, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

There are a larger variety of business opportunities including track-based mass transportation control, security monitoring, digital signage, kiosks, ATMs and vending machines, the sources indicated.

Most large projects, especially mass rapid transit system control, security monitoring and other types of integrated systems, have been or will be shared by international enterprises such as General Electric, Honeywell, Panasonic, and Siemens based on general contracts, the sources pointed out.

While these international general-contract undertakers are expected to rely on multiple subcontract device/equipment or supporting service providers, Taiwan-based IPC makers are less price competitive than local providers in China, the sources analyzed. Thus, the only chance for Taiwan-based IPC makers to land orders is through partnerships with China-based SI providers, the sources emphasized.
