Recent theoretical studies suggest that a coaxial nanowire would have a higher efficiency than a single bulk crystal as a solar cell for generating electricity. In addition to the higher efficiency, such a material has the added benefit of being able to be used as a wire in a device. Wires of this type could lead to nanoscale devices that can operate in the absence of an external power source.
