Eris gearing up for SiC component shipments for EV charging

Diode maker Eris Technology is expected to kick off shipments of SiC power components for EV charging applications in the fourth quarter of 2021, with the shipments set to expand next year, according to company sources.

Many power device manufacturers and silicon-based MOSFET chip makers in Taiwan, including Eris, Actron, Taiwan Semi, Pan Jit, Sinopower, Advanced Power Electronics, Excelliance, and Niko-Sem, are deploying for wide-bandgap third-generation semiconductors.

Japan-based integrated device manufacturer Rohm expects the price difference between SiC components for car application and other silicon-based components to narrow to 2.5 times within three years, and SiC components will be utilized in power inverters and charging stations for cars.

Eris has said shipments of mass-produced in-house developed SiC components in the fourth quarter will be mostly for charging posts. For this September, Eris reported NT$180 million (US$6.48 million) in consolidated revenue, up by 132.2% on year, with consolidated evenues for the first nine months of the year eaching NT$1.5 billion, up by over 30% on year.

Eris posted NT$540 million in revenue for the third quarter, increasing by 4.1% on quarter and by 54.7% on year. Demand for car applications, ESD and MOSFET devices is likely to remain solid into the fourth quarter.

According to industry sources, compound semiconductor applications will expand to more fields such as GaN-on-Si components in consumer electronics. Pure SiC components that are heat-resistant are suitable to be installed in cars.
