Eaton has helped industiral power users adjust their UPS to double as energy storage systems, according to Howard Kung, the company's Taiwan country manager.

Beginning January 1, 2021, Taiwan requires an industrial electricity account with contract capacity of over 5,000KW to set up a renewable energy generating facility with installation capacity 10% of the contract capacity in five years. They may instead install an energy storage system, purchase green energy certificates or pay money equivalent to the obligation.
It may be difficult to find land to renewable energy generating facilities near their factories, and purchases of green energy certificates and paying money are not fundamental solutions, Kung said, adding UPS also used as an energy storage system seems to become the best choice for most large industrial users of power.
Double-use UPS necessitates customized adjustment based on industry-specific power-using behavior to meet specified functions for required energy storage systems as well as help users in energy saving, Kung noted.
Eaton has adopted locally-produced lithium batteries for double-use UPS, Kung said, adding Eaton provides software, platforms and tools to help users in different industries undertake digital power management.
Eaton has set up production lines and a laboratory in Taiwan, and is setting up an exhibition center for energy storage solutions which will come into operation later in first-quarter 2021, Kung noted.
