Apple could be preparing to launch a new generation of the iPad mini, tentatively named the iPad mini 7.
Sources suggest that preparations are being made due to the dwindling inventory of the iPad mini 6. The new mini 7 is expected to support Apple's AI features, though it is still uncertain whether it will be announced at the September event.
According to reports from AppleInsider and 9to5Mac, internal Apple documents indicate that the iPad mini is now listed as "supply-constrained." This suggests that the device may be undergoing an update to support Apple's AI capabilities.
The iPad mini 6, launched in September 2021, featured a smaller bezel design with an 8.3-inch LCD screen and the A15 Bionic chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 13. However, it only has 4GB of RAM, which means the current version cannot support AI features with iPadOS 18.1.
Insiders believe that the iPad mini 7 is unlikely to receive significant design changes and will probably retain its current form. However, the position of the front camera and Face ID sensor might shift, and the screen could feature ProMotion technology with a new LCD panel to resolve previous viewing issues. The new iPad mini is expected to support Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3, with potential camera upgrades.
Additionally, Apple would need to use the A17 Pro or M-series processor to enable AI features on the iPad mini 7. If true, support for these capabilities would become a major selling point for the new iPad mini 7.
The release date of the updated iPad mini remains uncertain. It is possible that the new iPad mini could be unveiled at the September 2024 event alongside the new iPhone or later during a fall event or press conference. There are rumors that Apple will hold an event in October to introduce new Macs, which could be an opportunity to announce the revamped iPad mini.
