Huawei Technologies, to cope with US sanctions amid fast growing development of 5G and AI+IoT, is transforming its consumer electronics business from providing hardware to operating platforms and setting up ecosystems for devices and services mainly used in smart home, travel, office, health care and entertainment, according to Yun Hai, president for XunweiTech, the Chinese vendor's sales agent in Taiwan.

Huawei has launched Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) Core, a platform providing apps and cloud computing services for users of Huawei mobile devices and assistance for developers of apps. HMS Core has provided more than 120,000 apps and attracted over 530 million users and over 2.3 million registered app developers, said Yun.

According to Canalys, Huawei shipped 188.5 million smartphones and 16.3 million tablets globally in 2020, each ranking third among all vendors.

In the Taiwan market, Huawei will focus marketing on notebooks, smart wearables and audio devices such as earphones before it launches new smartphone models, Yun said, adding Huawei is confident of notebook sales in Taiwan.

XunweiTech on February 24 unveiled MateBook 14, a Huawei-developed 14-inch notebook featuring 2K screen resolution, AMD Ryzen 4000H processor, AMD Radeon graphics card, Windows 10 Home operating system, built-in memory of 16GB plus 512GB NVMe SSD and 15-minute fast charging to support 2.5-hour use, for launch in Taiwan in early March at a recommended price of NT$30,990 (US$1,107).
