As global networks become software-defined and edge inference transforms every sector, Intel announced on February 24 via its MWC Barcelona 2022 kick-off virtual keynote new programmable hardware and open software.

A series of announcements were unveiled, from new architectural enhancements and future central processing units (CPUs) in its next-generation Intel Xeon Scalable processor, Sapphire Rapids, to a new Intel Xeon D processor, Intel's newest SoC designed from the ground up for the software-defined network and edge.

In software, Intel presented enhancements to its portfolio, including OpenVINO 2022.1 and new software modules in Intel Smart Edge - all adding to increased performance and flexibility as developers innovate at the edge.

Alongside industry leaders - including leading communication service providers, telecommunication equipment manufacturers and Internet of Things (IoT) leaders American Tower, AT&T, BT, Ericsson, Rakuten Mobile, Verizon and Zeblok - Intel discussed its foundational role in powering the software-defined transformation across the network and edge.

As vRAN is deployed by operators globally, nearly all commercial deployments are running on Intel technology. Intel is doubling down on its commitment to continue growing a vibrant vRAN ecosystem and enabling vRAN to be delivered with uncompromised performance and meeting operators' key metrics. Intel is working with Samsung, Ericsson, Rakuten Symphony and other leading providers to bring new solutions to market that build on its next-generation Xeon Scalable platform, Sapphire Rapids.

New, unique 5G-specific signal processing instruction enhancements in the Sapphire Rapids core - built to support RAN-specific signal processing - will deliver up to two times capacity gains for vRAN and support advanced capabilities like high-cell density for 64T64R Massive MIMO, said Intel. This paves the way for customers to deploy vRAN in the world's most demanding environments.

In addition, the Sapphire Rapids family will be built out with new chips with integrated acceleration that are optimized for vRAN workloads. Customers will have greater flexibility and optimization points as they build out their networks, with the breadth of options that will be available in the next gen Intel Xeon Scalable processor family.

Designed from the ground up and packed with network- and edge-specific capabilities, Intel's new Xeon D processor delivers integrated AI and crypto acceleration, built-in Ethernet, support for time-coordinated computing and time-sensitive networking and industrial-class reliability. In situations where compute processing needs to be executed close to where data is generated, the new Intel Xeon D processor excels in use cases including security appliances, enterprise routers and switches, cloud storage, wireless networks and AI inferencing, according to the vendor.

For enterprises, cloud operators and communication service providers, the new Intel Xeon D processor enables low-latency, high-performance computing, more security and high network throughput at the edge when installed in a range of operating environments, including sites that are space- and power-constrained. More than 70 leading technology companies are working with Intel on designs that utilize the newest Intel Xeon D processors, including Cisco, Juniper Networks and Rakuten Symphony.

As computation increases at the edge and the rise of AI inference becomes a critical workload for nearly every industry, Intel announced two software updates. They deliver a robust edge developer experience, ensuring Intel hardware capabilities are accessible to developers in a cohesive, easy-to-program manner through open, modern cloud native platforms.

To help developers further advance AI and take advantage of new and existing hardware performance, Intel released the biggest upgrade to OpenVINO in more than three years. Three new product enhancements in OpenVINO 2022.1 lead the way.

An updated and simplified API to more easily import TensorFlow models and to significantly improve code portability allows for faster time to market.

A broadened model coverage with enhanced support for natural language processing, double-precision models and advanced computer vision creates a significant performance boost across a greater range of use cases and model types.

A new, groundbreaking automatic optimization capability auto-discovers all compute and accelerators on a given system and then dynamically load balances and increases AI parallelization based on memory and compute capacity. The result is that application developers no longer need to know in advance what the hardware configuration will be.

As more developers innovate new services at the edge, Intel also announced new software modules in its Smart Edge portfolio. The modules are fully optimized on Intel Xeon processors to accelerate 5G User Plane Function (UPF) workloads at the network edge, helping deliver the required latency and bandwidth. The modules abstract the complexities of the hardware so developers can write applications on top that take full advantage of the packet processing capabilities in Intel's CPUs, offering an easier path to enhance 5G UPF performance.

Earlier at the event, Intel also expands the 12th Gen Intel Core mobile processor lineup with the official launch of 12th Gen Intel Core P-series and U-series processors and the 20 new mobile processors will power the next generation of thin-and-light notebooks. The first devices will be available in March 2022, with more than 250 coming this year from Acer, Asus, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, LG, MSI, NEC, Samsung and others.

Intel also announced the Intel NUC 12 Extreme (codenamed Dragon Canyon) and the Intel NUC 12 Extreme Compute Element (codenamed Eden Bay), a highly modular desktop PC kit engineered to provide phenomenal performance for high-end gaming and content creation tasks. With the latest 12th Gen Intel Core desktop processors, capacity for full-size 12-inch discrete graphics cards and a full range of I/O ports including Thunderbolt 4, the Intel NUC 12 Extreme delivers massive performance and features that enthusiast gamers and professional creators need in a compact and modular form factor.

The NUC 12 Extreme offers breakthrough speeds with up to a 12th Gen Intel Core i9 processor, featuring eight Performance-cores (P-cores) and eight Efficient-cores (E-cores), 24 threads and up to 5.1GHz turbo boost max frequency.
