Samsung Electronics (Samsung) is reportedly building an image quality lab for CIS. To catch up to Sony, it is planning on using simulated photography of various scenery to enhance its high-resolution image technology in CIS.
According to Seoul Economic Daily, Samsung has recently set up a CIS image quality lab in its system LSI department. It has also built various photo studios for indoor and outdoor effects such as neon lights, night photography, close-ups, and moonlight, hoping to test CIS effectiveness.
Samsung stated that due to camera functions, most issues occur when taking photos outdoors. The implementation of the new CIS image quality lab was discussed during meetings between numerous parties. From the smallest details to the system as a whole, each studio took four years to design.
The CIS image quality lab has a self-driving film dolly. The researchers only need to preset the film route, and the dolly will automatically proceed along it.
Settings that may affect image output such as angle, shutter speed, sensor mode, and brightness, can all be modified remotely with the film dolly. In addition, the film dolly has a built-in mechanical arm, allowing it to film from various angles.
According to data from Techno Systems Research, Samsung's revenue in image sensors took up 13.7% of the global market in 2023, majorly falling behind Sony's 52.7%. However, the 200-Megapixel (MP) Image Sensor that Samsung released in 2021 for mobile has maintained its leading position among high-resolution products, continuing its chase after Sony. Samsung holds an average annual growth in revenue of 64.5% within the market for CIS products over 200MP and shows great potential in the CIS market as a whole.
