Samsung Electronics (Samsung) has revealed that its Galaxy Tab S10 series features the MediaTek Dimensity 9300+ chip, departing from its usual choice of Qualcomm or in-house application processors (APs). This strategic decision has garnered significant attention in the tech industry.
The Seoul Economic Daily reported that Samsung's choice to incorporate MediaTek's chips in the Galaxy Tab S10 stems from increasing pressure on the company's AP costs. In an effort to decrease its dependence on Qualcomm's AP, Samsung has adopted a strategy of diversifying suppliers.
In the second quarter of 2024, Samsung's Mobile Experience (MX) division reported higher revenue compared to the same period in 2023. However, due to AP costs and other factors, operating income only reached KRW2.23 trillion (approx. US$1.7 billion), representing a year-over-year decrease of 26.6%.
Among existing MediaTek products, the Dimensity 9300+ is the most advanced chip available, second only to the yet-to-be-released Dimensity 9400. According to sources, the Dimensity 9300+ uses TSMC's 4nm process, and its performance is comparable to that of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 series, but at a lower cost.
On the software front, the Galaxy Tab S10 emphasizes AI applications and fully supports Samsung's in-house Generative AI (GenAI) solution, Galaxy AI. Its functions include audio recording summarization, PDF translation, image search, and image conversion.
Furthermore, the Galaxy Tab S10's separately sold keyboard includes a dedicated Galaxy AI Key, which can activate AI assistants such as Samsung's Bixby or Google's Gemini.
The Galaxy Tab S10 series eschews a standard model, offering only the Galaxy Tab S10 Plus and Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra, with 12.6-inch and 14.6-inch displays respectively.
Compared to the previous generation, the Galaxy Tab S10 Ultra boasts performance improvements of 18% in CPU, 28% in GPU, and 14% in NPU.
Samsung has positioned the Galaxy Tab S10 series as high-end tablets that deliver advanced AI experiences. Users can expect to leverage improved AI functions to enhance their creative processes.
