LG Display (LGD) has implemented a self-developed artificial intelligence (AI) system into its OLED manufacturing process. The AI system collects and analyzes OLED process data in real-time to identify optimal solutions, expected to save over KRW200 billion (approx. US$139 million) in operational costs annually.

According to reports from South Korean media such as Money Today, Chosun Biz, and ET News, the company's AI solution is specifically designed for the complex OLED manufacturing process, enabling real-time data collection and analysis.

The system incorporates comprehensive OLED manufacturing expertise, allowing it to learn from production data, analyze defect causes, and generate solutions automatically.

The OLED production process consists of over 140 steps executed across multiple machines, generating tens of thousands of data points simultaneously. This complexity previously made it difficult to detect the exact cause of defects. However, with the AI solution system, defect sources can be identified quickly and accurately.

According to LGD, while analyzing and resolving issues based on engineers' personal experience and expertise previously took about three weeks, the same process now only takes two days with AI assistance.

Previously reliant on individual engineers' expertise to solve problems within constraints, LGD can now instantly adjust manufacturing processes across all products to meet AI-predicted optimal quality standards. The AI system continuously monitors product quality throughout production, swiftly identifying defects and issues.

Additionally, LGD has implemented an AI data automatic notification system, which distributes real-time collected and analyzed data via email to relevant departments every morning. When AI detects anomalies, the system automatically suspends the operation of affected equipment, ensuring both efficiency and safety.

LGD emphasizes that the introduction of AI and big data analysis allows engineers to focus on high-density, high-value-added tasks such as developing solutions and improving processes, instead of data collection and analysis.

Looking ahead, LGD plans to enhance its competitiveness in display R&D and manufacturing while promoting digital transformation across general business processes, and improving technical standards and productivity.
