With the global semiconductor market projected to exceed US$1 trillion within the next decade, IC packaging and testing leader ASE is accelerating its overseas expansion. The company's fifth factory in Penang, Malaysia, officially opened on February 18, 2025.
The opening ceremony of ASE's fifth factory in Penang was attended by local officials, including Deputy Chief Minister of Penang II, Jagdeep Singh Deo, and Sivasuriyamoorthy Sundara Raja, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA).
ASE stated that the new factory is part of its strategic expansion plan. With the official launch of the Penang facility, ASE will significantly increase its packaging capacity at the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, expanding from the current 1 million square feet to approximately 3.4 million square feet.
The inauguration of this new plant signifies ASE's entry into a new era of smart manufacturing in Malaysia. Its Malaysian facilities have gradually adopted Industry 4.0 technologies and factory automation solutions in recent years, utilizing AI for anomaly detection and leveraging big data analytics to improve yield rates and optimize production processes. The new factory aims to substantially boost productivity and efficiency through Artificial Intelligence Internet of Things (AIoT) applications.
ASE stated that it will continue to invest resources and human capital to capture more market share while expanding the scope and depth of its services. This expansion is expected to drive greater recruitment needs and training development, with plans to add 1,500 employees over the next few years, fostering more high-end technical talent for the global semiconductor industry and accelerating industrial upgrades.
