SK Hynix has introduced what it claims to be the industry's best-performing GDDR7, a next-generation graphics memory product.

The GDDR7 product was created in March in response to the growing interest of worldwide AI clients in a DRAM product that meets the requirements of high speed and specialized performance for graphics processing. The company plans to begin volume production in the third quarter.

SK Hynix's GDDR7 product has an operating speed of 32Gbps, a 60% increase over the previous generation. The speed can go up to 40Gbps, depending on the circumstances. The product is capable of processing data exceeding 1.5TB per second when used with top-tier graphics cards. This is equivalent to the processing of 300 Full-HD movies, each with a capacity of 5GB, in a single second.

SK Hynix also boosted power efficiency by more than 50% compared to the previous generation by implementing advanced packaging technology that addresses the heat issue caused by ultra-fast data processing.

Furthermore, SK Hynix increased the number of layers in the heat-dissipating substrates from four to six, while using Epoxy Molding Compound (EMC) for the packaging material, to reduce thermal resistance by 74% compared to the previous generation while keeping the product's size constant.

"GDDR7 is expected to be adopted by a wider range of applications such as high-specification 3D graphics, AI, high-performance computing, and autonomous driving," said Sangkwon Lee, head of DRAM product planning & enablement at SK Hynix. "We will continue to work towards enhancing our position as the most trusted AI memory solution provider by strengthening the premium memory lineup further."
