Fujifilm Electronic Materials Taiwan held a groundbreaking ceremony for its new facility in Hsinchu, northern Taiwan, on December 2. The event drew several prominent Fujifilm executives, including board members Tetsuya Iwasaki and Hiroshi Ito, Fujifilm Electronics Materials Taiwan chairman Kenichi Tanaka, and president Alex Chang.
Since 2010, Fujifilm Electronics Materials has been strengthening its local manufacturing presence in Taiwan through facilities in Hsinchu and Tainan. The company announced plans for the new Hsinchu plant in May 2023, with completion scheduled for 2026. The facility will serve as the company's Taiwan headquarters, consolidating all development, manufacturing, sales, and administrative operations.
The company is simultaneously expanding its Tainan facility (Plant Three) with additional equipment and manufacturing lines, including a new CMP slurry production line. The combined investment for the Hsinchu and Tainan expansions is expected to exceed JPY15 billion (US$112 million).
Industry sources indicate the new Hsinchu plant will target opportunities in the emerging 2-nanometer market through advanced production and quality assurance equipment. The facility will enhance local production and technical support for CMP slurries and photolithography-related materials, while new storage facilities will ensure swift supply and response to customer requirements.
Technology advancement drives growth
According to Iwasaki, the electronic materials business of the Fujifilm Group has seen continuous expansion since entering the semiconductor market in 1983. Global sales reached JPY200 billion in fiscal year 2023, establishing it as a core business within the Fujifilm Group, with significant revenue contribution from its Taiwanese subsidiary.
Headquartered in Yokohama, Japan, Fujifilm Electronics Materials operates 20 locations worldwide. Its Taiwan subsidiary, established in 1996 in Hsinchu Industrial Park, specializes in producing specialty chemical materials and provides stable supply services to Taiwanese semiconductor customers through advanced quality systems.
Beyond Plants 1 and 2 in Hsinchu Industrial Park, the company has expanded to the Southern Taiwan Science Park. To accommodate the growing semiconductor market demand in Taiwan, the company acquired additional land near its original site to expand capacity and unify office operations for Plants 1 and 2.
